Olive Wood – Characterful and Timeless
Olive wood is a wonderfully fragrant, hard and heavy wood. It is easy to work with and often shows spectacular grain patterns. Despite its sometimes irregular structure, it can be finished to an exceptionally smooth surface, making it perfect for turning.
Olive wood is one of the most popular woods among woodworkers and turners. It is known for its warm tones, striking dark veining, and hardness. No two pieces are alike: every plank, block, or pen blank has a unique pattern that instantly adds character to your workpiece.
Properties
- Color & grain: light yellow to golden brown with striking dark veins
- Hardness: dense and strong, resulting in a smooth surface and fine finish
- Durability: highly resistant to wear and decay
- Fragrance: releases its distinctive, pleasant olive scent when worked
Applications
Olive wood is ideal for luxury items and artistic projects such as bowls, pens, knife handles, cutting boards, and other kitchen accessories.
Workability
Due to its high density, olive wood requires sharp tools and some patience. The reward is an exceptionally smooth finish with a natural sheen. Finishing with oil or wax enhances the warm tones and highlights the beautiful grain.
