Tineo (indisch appelhout)
Tineo
Tineo is a pinkish reddish-brown wood with dark veins that give it a distinctive figure. The grain is fine, making it a pleasure to turn and finish. It is also an excellent wood for carving.
The species is commonly known as Indian Apple, which is rather strange since the tree grows mainly in South America (Chile and Argentina) and is not an apple tree at all. Its botanical name is Weinmannia trichosperma, belonging to the Cunoniaceae family. It is an evergreen tree.
A Tineo tree can reach a height of around 30 metres, with a typical trunk diameter of 60 to 100 cm. Tineo is most often used for exclusive veneers. The dark streaks are particularly valued for creating attractive book-matched patterns. Solid timber is only available in limited quantities, and the dark veining is usually less pronounced, as the most decorative material has often already been used for veneer production. Nevertheless, Tineo remains a beautiful and highly sought-after wood.
