Black Locust (Robinia pseudoacacia)
Black locust is one of the hardest timbers that grow in Europe. The wood has a warm yellow to olive-green colour that gradually darkens over time. Black locust is known for its excellent natural durability, even without treatment. The tree is sometimes referred to as acacia or false acacia, although this is not entirely correct. True acacias belong to a different genus, and botanically black locust is not an acacia.
For woodturners, black locust is an interesting timber to work with. The wood is hard and tough, so sharp tools are essential, but it can produce a very fine finish. The grain is often lively and can create beautiful patterns in bowls, vessels and other turned objects. The wood contains a high amount of tannins, and when fumed with ammonia or treated with iron acetate it can develop a beautiful dark tone.
Thanks to its natural resistance to fungi and insects, black locust is also widely used for outdoor applications.

Larger pieces of black locust are less common. The tree grows relatively slowly and the trunks are often quite crooked.
